1 Step Forward

Altogether a good week.  Had a good job interview on Wednesday with K'Star, an agency that helps shelter and  consul troubled and at risk youths.  Should hear by the middle of next week if I got the position.  Also, last night H.E.B. called and set up an interview for Thursday for their store in Fredericksburg.

We have signed up for a mile walk/run in Lllano and Erica and Tom will be spending the night with us on Friday and we will all head up there on Saturday morning.  Mom (Grandma G) will also be attending (ok, as a spectator for the race).  Of course, we are planning on having spaghetti for dinner and carb loading for the race.  Mom is bring desert, too.

I got in approximately 12.76 miles this week, and I lost  .6 of a pound.  I should  have done better, but by counting my calories, I have confirmed that evening and night are when I consume WAY too many calories.  I probably averaged 3500 calories a day this past week.

Although this week has been good, it hasn't been perfect by any means.  I have been feeling a lot of stress this week do to our financial situation and we learned the landlord wants to sell his "block".  Of course I manifest the stress by being 'short' and angry with Leta.  Not Good.  :-(

Well I got several things to pray about this week, and to work on.

Marking Time

Another week has come and gone.  The weather has been great considering it is January although we did have a couple cold nights, but the days have been sunny and in the 50-60's for the most part.  I haven't found a job yet, but continue to apply and at least there are ad's here for positions.  I think Leta is more discouraged than I am.  She is discouraged about everything, med's, lack of money and jobs, job prospects, and family relationships.

Not only is she depressed and discouraged, but she is bored.  She expressed and interest in painting rocks, so I have picked her up a few and booked marked a web page for some examples.  We did pick up some paint pens for her and I hope to get her some more rocks and maybe some clear acrylic paint so she can have a smooth service to work on and seal the work when completed.

We did have mom over for Sunday brunch, on Monday (she would say we are late for everything) but it was mainly because the weather was foggy, cold and rainy on Sunday.  We had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans and fruit salad.  It was all yummy!

We are getting settled in, I even got the bird feeders up, and plan on starting our 'yard' list.  Leta went to a bible study on King David, and about 150 women were in attendance.  We went to Trinity Baptist Church on Sunday and were please with the experience, although it wasn't home church!  While Leta was at the bible study, I dropped of some applications and ran some errands.  I stopped at the Birds Unlimited store to ask about birding "hot spots" and met Richard Redmond who offered to take me birding at the local nature center.   I did see a Golden Fronted Woodpecker, but we didn't find the Green Kingfisher or Green-winged Teal.  Also present were cedar wax-wings, blue jays, cardinals, yellow rumped warblers, white tail deer, Carolina chickadees and turtles sunning themselves.

Health-wise  this week was pretty good. I completed Week 2 of the Couch to 5 K program, although day three was tough!  I just download week 3 onto the MP3 player so I'm good to go.  I'm thinking about heading out, although this should be a rest day.. I'm feeling pretty good, even though yesterday's run seemed hard.  I've gotten in almost 10 miles in again this week, so I would like to increase my mileage as I work to getting into shape for the Llano Not so Fun Run on Feb.5th.  Another reason I want to run, is I have over-eating averaging over 3000 calories (a guess).

Running in Place

A good week, although nothing much has been accomplished.  The highlight of the week was having dinner with Erica and Tom.  I did "run" for almost 10 miles over the coarse of the week and complete week 1 of the couch to 5 K program.  (Only seven more weeks to go!)  I also signed up for a "challenge" of running 30 miles in 30 days, on the map my run www.mapmyrun.com site.  Somehow today's workout got posted 3 times so I already am more than 1/3 of the way there!  Yes, I'm trying to figure out how to remove the duplicates!

Erica and Tom are running in the Hot Chocolate 5K up near Dallas this weekend.  I'm a bit envious but I'm looking forward to running/walking in 4 events this year!

I continue to look for a job, even applying for night desk clerk at local hotels and Leta has apply for a Breakfast Hostess position at one of the hotels.  Mom bought some clothes and food for us.  Well I think I'll post this and work a bit on a sewing project!

Progress(?) Report Week 1

Well the first week of 2011 draws to a close and it seems we have made some progress on settling into our new house and job search, although much more needs to be done.  First the bad news, I haven't found  a job yet, but I remain optimistic that the Lord has good things instore for me, and I have a couple leads to follow up on.  Second the house is slowly getting put together and boxes unpacked.  We really need to pick up the pace on this effort!  Third I haven't exercised as much as I wanted to, and I haven't come across our bathroom scale yet (prolly because of issue number two enumerated above!).  Fourth,  I haven't been able to take care of some administrative issues (e.g. getting a Texas driver's license ) yet, for several reasons. Finally, I haven't worked much on my various goals and 2011 resolutions.

Now for the good news, we did accomplish a few things this week.  We purchased (ok Mom purchased) a car (when I find the usb cable that fits the camera, I'll try to post a picture of the 2009 Fire Engine Red Chevy HHR!)  and we were even able to purchase insurance! (Boy is that a story!) We also made a trip to the food bank at St. Vincent De Paul's and browsed several resale shops looking for some furniture and household furnishings.  I did get out and walk 2 times this week totaling approximately 5.7 miles in 1.9 hours (call me molasses as it is January!)  I did apply for several jobs and have a few more to follow up on next week.

Leta and I enjoyed our first picnic of the year on Thursday.  It was just a little chilly when the wind blew, but we were in the sun so it was definitely tolerable.  We picnicked in the park along the Guadalupe River here in Kerrville  and enjoyed the first Sonic burgers of the year.

Relationship-wise this week was great.  We plan on meeting with Mark Boyle tomorrow in Johnson City and with Erica, Tom and my mom on Sunday for dinner at our house.  We met a very nice Christian used car salesman (no oxymoron or sarcasm intended!).  He is a displaced Michigander and reminds us of Ben Kriesch!  He has  invited us to church and even called me to suggest a couple of places to work.

Tonight we drove to Bandera and met with old friends (although I just met them tonight!)  I baked bread to take with and they provided the rest of the meal and great hospitality.  Leta and Claude and Cheryl reminisced and we had an extremely good time.  They reminded me of our other great friends, Woody and Bendy up in Michigan!

Well that about sums up the week!  Blessing to all.

New Year Resolutions!

I  always make new Resolutions for the New Year, but I am guardedly optimistic that this year will be different!

First of all we are starting a new life if Texas and have many new beginnings.  I think we have a good support network with friends, family and even internet communities helping, encouraging, supporting and keeping us accountable.  Thanks in advance to everyone for their help in me achieving the goals!  Additionally, we have software (such as this blog and 43things.com) to track our progress and record our journey towards our goals.

In no particular order here are my goals for 2011:

  • Lose weight (get below 200 lbs)
  • Participate in 4 5-K Races
  • Get a job ASAP
  • Trip to Grand Canyon
  • Open a used Bookstore / Coffee shop / Art consignment / and Holistic Health shop
  • Get creative with crafts/ sewing!
  • Budget wisely and become good stewards of time/ money and talents, including Tithing to Church and paying debts and current bills, saving some money and giving additional money to a selected charity each month
Today I did walk for a little bit (probably around 15 minutes, but it was better than nothing!)  My starting health stat numbers are weight estimated at around 220, blood pressure (unmedicated )168/111 pulse 69) waist measurement  42 inches or so.
